Three Geraldine High School students were awarded the AgriKidsNZ national champions trophies at a special presentation at their school.

NZ Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland and Competitions Co-ordinator David Highsted presented trophies to Jessica Furrer, Angus Wallace and William Wilson who took out the national title back in July.

Mr Copeland said it was a privilege to be able to award the accolade in front of the trio's peers at their school assembly.

"These three not only represented their school well, they also represent the dynamic future of the Primary Industry."

The AgriKidsNZ competition continues to be a vital window into agriculture for rural and urban students alike, he said.

"We are proud of the role NZ Young Farmers plays in developing the next generation of our Primary Industry and believe the AgriKidsNZ competitions showcase the excellent opportunities available to all young New Zealanders."

Competitions Co-ordinator, David Highsted, said the AgriKidsNZ competition was developed in 2005 to introduce and make agriculture fun and accessible to young New Zealanders.

"We aim to share the passion we feel about agriculture in the hope that more students will see the wide range of excellent careers available in the industry."

Mr Highsted said the Geraldine trio were exceptional competitors and had represented their High School with pride.

Beginning with Regional Finals at the start of the year, competitors are tested on a wide range of agricultural knowledge from theory to hands on skills in a fun but educational environment.

The top three teams at each regional then go on to compete at the Grand Final alongside the FMG Young Farmer of the Year each July.

The trio came seventh in the previous year and are the first from Geraldine High to take out the AgriKidsNZ title.
